New Music: Lupe Fiasco – “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)”

As a Lupe Fiasco fan who was not feeling his last album and mixtape, I couldn’t wait to hear the first single off of his upcoming album, to see what direction he would be going in this time around. Yesterday, he dropped the first single to his upcoming album Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album and I was pleased. Not to mention, he used the beat to a hip-hop classic — “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y). Undoubtedly, though, some classics just shouldn’t be touched and that’s exactly how Pete Rock felt about Lupe using the sample. According to Rap-Up, Pete Rock tweeted, “No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone.” He went on to say, “Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made outta anguish and pain. When it’s like that it should not be touched by no one! It’s so hard for folks to make original music, I possess that, but these dudes are scared of that and this is supposed to be HIP HOP?”

Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album is set to release in September.
